Chapter 134 A Family of Three Comes to Jump Off the Bridge
[Banana: Minor cliff ahead, jump at your own risk no puns intended :v ]
Papa Gu asked irritably, “It’s fine if you picked up another older brother, younger brothers, older sisters, or younger sisters, but you got yourself another father?! Are you crazy?!”
Brother Gu added, “You’re already over twenty. And yet, you are still acting like a child, fooling around every day!”
Gu Ye shrank his neck, looking obedient, unsure of what to say.
After Papa Gu sat down, he angrily asked Gu Ye, “Tell me! Who gave you the guts?! Do you think you can just go out and randomly pick up a dad?”
Gu Ye chuckled dryly, “Isn’t it because you spoiled me?”
Papa Gu slammed his hand on the table angrily, “You dare say that!”
Gu Ye asked helplessly, “Didn’t you ask first? Should I tell you or not?”
Since Gu Ye remained unrepentant and refused to admit his mistake, Papa Gu started angrily searching for something. He looked around the office but found nothing suitable. There happened to be a laptop on the desk. Papa Gu saw it and tried to pick it up, but Gu Sen quickly stopped him, saying, “Just scare him a little, don’t actually hit him.”
“That brat!”
Gu Sen asked coldly, “Do you admit that you were wrong?”
Gu Ye quickly said, “Yes!”
“What did you do wrong?”
“I don’t kn… I mean I shouldn’t call anyone my father so casually! I won’t do that again, I’m sorry!” Gu Ye obediently admitted his mistake. 3 were enough; he wouldn’t accept any more, even if someone offered.
Papa Gu pointed at Gu Ye, “You…it’s good that you know.”
Gu Ye’s attitude in admitting his mistake was so good that his parents had nothing to say. Taking advantage of his father’s softened expression, Gu Sen waved to Gu Ye, signaling him to leave quickly.
Gu Ye asked softly, “Big brother, about my shop?”
Gu Sen’s expression instantly turned cold, “Don’t even think about it. Come help me at the company after graduation.”
From that reply, Gu Ye understood. It seems that asking his older brother wasn’t an option. Under Xie Cheng’s sympathetic gaze, Gu Ye whispered, “Then I’m leaving.”
Papa Gu asked coldly, “Where are you going?”
Gu Ye obediently replied, “To study.” Only then did Papa Gu let him leave.
After leaving, Gu Ye was utterly exhausted and dejected, barely able to walk.
Xie Cheng asked sympathetically, “Dude, are you alright?”
Gu Ye asked in a heartbroken tone, “Would your master scold you like that?”
“No, he’d just straight up hit me.”
Instantly, Gu Ye felt comforted. Hearing someone worse off than himself really did heal him.
Gu Ye really wanted this shop, but he couldn’t get it from his older brother. And so, Gu Ye called Gu Lin, sounding like he was wronged, “Brother, Big brother and Dad beat me up together.”
At the side, Xie Cheng’s lips twitched. Gu Ye was unbelievable. In front of his family, he was a dramatic little troll, the kind who would complain at the slightest grievance. He was a completely different person from the possessed psychopath from last night!
Gu Lin exclaimed in surprise, “Big brother hit you too? Did he take the wrong medicine to hit you?!”
Gu Ye said aggrievedly, “Brother, you have to help me.”
“Tell me what happened?”
Gu Ye said seriously, “I wanted a shop, but Big brother wouldn’t give it to me. Then he and Dad scolded me.”
“What kind of shop?”
“It’s a shop that sells talismans, called King of Hell’s Temple.”
“You shouldn’t have told him the truth. If you said you were selling dolls, he would have given it to you. Opening a temple for the King of Hell? You’re asking for a beating.”
Gu Ye thought for a moment, “Then I’ll change the name to Dad’s Shop.”
Gu Lin went silent for a while before asking, “Won’t Dad beat you to death? Wait, I just received a message from Big Brother.”
Gu Ye immediately had a bad feeling. Sure enough, he heard the person on the other end laugh and ask, “Well, kid, you have started to aim for me for your tricks. Your second brother is easy to trick, isn’t he? Big brother was scolding you because you randomly claimed people to be your father and aren’t doing anything productive. Then, you’re planning to open a shop selling talismans after graduation, that’s why he’s disciplining you. If I set up a shop for you, wouldn’t they scold me instead? If you want one elsewhere, I’ll buy it for you. But Big Brother is no-go, I can’t afford to offend him. Bye~”
“Hello? Brother? Brother!” Gu Ye’s heart sank. When it really mattered, even his brother was unreliable; he had to turn to his Yu Ze.
“Xie Cheng, can you drive?”
“Yes.”
Gu Ye handed the car keys to Xie Cheng. “Go and get my car over here, I’ll make another call.”
Not sure what Gu Ye wanted to do, Xie Cheng urged him, “Hurry up, if your dad catches us, we won’t be able to leave.”
Gu Ye waited until Xie Cheng was out of sight before calling Yu Ze. “Honey, I want to open a shop after graduation.”
Yu Ze didn’t even ask, “Do it.”
Gu Ye smiled, “It needs to be a big shop, in a good location, close to home. I think my older brother’s commercial street is pretty good.”
“I’ll buy you one at a good location.”
Gu Ye laughed and said, “Aren’t you going to ask me what I’m doing with the shop? I’m going to open a temple for the King of Hell.”
Yu Ze encouraged Gu Ye, “Go ahead, do whatever you want, as long as you’re happy.”
Hearing that, Gu Ye’s eyes crinkled with laughter. “I love you.”
Yu Ze laughed, “Is that all you wanted to talk to me about? When are you done at your side?”
Sensing the dissatisfaction in Yu Ze’s words, Gu Ye said with a smile, “Xie Cheng and I are going to dig for treasure tonight. I’ll come find you tomorrow.”
“Okay, I’ll be waiting for you tomorrow.”
As Xie Cheng drove up, he saw Gu Ye’s expression from afar and knew who he was calling. He parked next to Gu Ye, rolled down the window, and teased, “Are we still going to dig for treasure?”
Gu Ye got in the car and said, “Of course. It’s fate that we met. Even God wouldn’t stand by and watch if we didn’t bring it back.”
Xie Cheng joked, “What’s the point of the treasure hunting? Just be cute, and Brother Yu will go (do it for you).”
“You don’t know anything,” Gu Ye rolled his eyes, disdainfully saying, “A single dog like you wouldn’t understand. You don’t need to say anything, just drive.”
Xie Cheng looked at Gu Ye with disdain, as if he didn’t know that Gu Ye was fierce outside but helpless at home. Only Brother Yu believed him.
Holding the aerial photos, the two returned to the Yin-Gathering Array. The map now marked the locations of the other formation’s focal points. Centered on the hospital, five surrounding buildings formed the formation’s base. One of them had already been demolished, leaving only ruins; nothing could be found there. They didn’t know how easy it would be to find the others.
Xie Cheng said, “If they sealed those things directly inside concrete slabs when they built the buildings, we wouldn’t have anything to look for.”
Gu Ye held up one finger, shook it, and said confidently, “I bet they can’t bear to seal something this valuable inside a concrete slab. They wouldn’t be able to see it if it broke. Since the array core in the hospital was stored in a hidden compartment, the other buildings must have the same. Let’s go look in the basement.”
Xie Cheng raised an eyebrow, “You’re quite the expert at finding treasures.”
Gu Ye said modestly, “It’s a gift from heaven. If I find something and don’t bring it home, heaven will be unhappy. I’ll get used to it.”
Xie Cheng was both amused and exasperated, “Like I’ll believe your nonsense.”
The two of them, following the ominous energy in the remaining four buildings, found the hidden compartments in each one. After searching for most of the night, they finally found all the array cores: 4 pieces of jade.
These items are inferior in quality to the dagger. Just look at the jade; green is the most prized color in jade, and the jade on the dagger is a clear, vibrant green with excellent translucency; it’s obviously very valuable. However, none of these 4 pieces is modern jade, so they still have considerable collectible value.
Gu Ye happily held the jade pieces in his hands, rubbing them together. “When I get back, I’ll wipe off the evil energy and give it to my dad to appease him.”
But Xie Cheng felt rather guilty. “These four combined don’t seem to be worth as much as this dagger of mine.”
“Don’t measure its value in terms of money. This is for self-defense. If a ghost gets close to you, you can’t exactly use a whip, can you? This dagger is like it was made for you. Just take it.”
Xie Cheng thought for a moment. “How about I give you some more money?” After saying all that, even Xie Cheng himself felt the offer was terrible. Gu Ye’s family had countless riches, while he was a penniless nobody.
Gu Ye patted Xie Cheng on the shoulder, “Don’t think too much about it. It’s just a weapon. If I don’t use it, it’s just junk. This jade is perfect for pleasing the old man in my family; he likes jade. Even if you wanted to trade it with me, I wouldn’t trade. Besides, we agreed that what’s left is mine; you cannot take back your words.”
Upon hearing Gu Ye’s words, Xie Cheng suddenly had a bright idea. “How about I’ll pry this jade off and give it to you for Uncle.”
“No way!” Gu Ye laughed. “What if you break it? Jade is a spiritual object too. Without it, the dagger may not be very useful. Stop talking nonsense, just take it.”
Xie Cheng then stopped prying and carefully put the dagger away.
After returning home, Gu Ye cleaned the four pieces of jade, removing any negative energy and restoring them to their normal antique state. Then he called his father, asking, “Where are you now?”
Papa Gu, thinking something was wrong, replied seriously, “I’m at the company now. Did you get into trouble again?”
Gu Ye was both amused and exasperated. “Dad, am I really that unreliable in your eyes?”
Papa Gu remained silent, his silence speaking volumes.
Gu Ye sighed, “I’ll come see you in a bit and give you something.”
Papa Gu paused. “What could you possibly give me?” Although there was a hint of disdain in his voice, Gu Ye could already imagine his father’s expression; the proud old man looking secretly pleased.
Gu Ye drove straight to the company. When he arrived, Papa Gu was reviewing a report and seemed a little tired. His secretary made him a cup of tea.
As soon as Gu Ye entered, Papa Gu curiously glanced at his empty hands and couldn’t help but ask, “What did you come all this way to give me?”
Gu Ye pulled out 4 pieces of ancient jade from his pocket and smiled, “These are for you.”
Papa Gu looked at the shape and color and asked in surprise, “Where did you get these?”
“I didn’t steal, didn’t rob for them, I got them through my own abilities.”
Papa Gu picked up one piece, and a smile finally appeared on his face. “It looks like it’s from the Ming Dynasty.”
Seeing his father’s expression, Gu Ye smiled and said, “I’m glad you like them.”
Papa Gu picked them up one by one and commented, “You didn’t even bother to wrap these fragile things.”
“Why wrap it? It’s not a gift. You can keep it for fun.” Then Gu Ye instructed, “Rest when you’re tired, leave work early tonight, and avoid too many social engagements.”
Having been appeased by Gu Ye, Papa Gu smiled but still pretended to be impatient, “I know. How can an unreliable person like you still want to control me?”
Gu Ye smiled. “I was just worried about you. I’m leaving now.”
Papa Gu smirked. “Be careful on the road.”
“Then tell my mom I won’t be eating at home tonight. I’m going to find Yu Ze.”
Papa Gu said disdainfully, “Go, go. People who don’t know better will think you’re from the Yu family instead.”
After leaving the company, Gu Ye thought of the hidden joy in his father’s eyes and smiled. The old man was quite easy to please.
