Chapter 124 I Really Can Summon Souls
The police arrived after being notified. Because it wasn’t a simple domestic dispute, more officers were dispatched that afternoon. Upon entering the ward, they saw the fight had already broken out and quickly pulled the people apart. “What happened? Wu Licheng, you beat your wife like this, and you still dare to cause trouble at the hospital? Do you think nobody can control you?”
After being taught a lesson by bodyguard Brother Wang, Wu Licheng was already feeling fearful and dared not be arrogant anymore. His face flushed red, and he said with a fierce tone but weak voice, “What’s wrong with me talking to my own wife? Is it illegal for me to discipline my own wife?”
Gu Ye coldly replied, “It is!”
“Ill… illegal your head!” Wu Licheng wanted to curse, but a glare from Brother Wang prevented him from uttering the rest of his words.
Seeing Wu Licheng’s attitude, the police knew that keeping him here would prevent Fang Mei from recovering properly. “You assaulted someone and are causing trouble at the hospital. You’ll have to come back with us for a couple of days to calm down.”
In the past, these kinds of situations were difficult for the police to handle; they could only advise reconciliation, not separation. Because if they did, the couple would return and blame the police instead. Now that Fang Mei was here, the police directly asked her, “Can you two still live together? If you still want to be together, we won’t get involved. If you can’t, and want to sue him, we’ll take him away.”
Fang Mei said indifferently, “I’m going to get a divorce. This divorce is a must.”
“You dare?!”
The old woman had been listening at the side and watching the situation unfold. Hearing Fang Mei’s words, she panicked and lunged at the police officer, shoving him. “Let go of my son! Don’t listen to her nonsense. What divorce? How to go on with our lives if they get divorced?” The old woman looked at Fang Mei and threatened, “Fang Mei, if you get a divorce, does it mean you won’t mind what happens to your brother?”
Fang Mei simply said sarcastically, “I can’t even survive myself. Why should I care about him? If you don’t want a divorce, fine, I’ll poison your whole family with a packet of rat poison.”
It’s either divorce or death. Not divorcing is just another way to die. Fang Mei no longer hid her true intentions; she wanted their whole family dead, and she dared to say this even with the police around.
The old woman’s expression changed. “Fang Mei, are you crazy?”
Fang Mei scoffed. “Wasn’t it because of you all?”
At that moment, the doctor came out with the examination report. “Stop arguing. Officer, this is Fang Mei’s injury report: one broken rib, two fractured bones, a severe blow to the abdomen, and a miscarriage at just 5 weeks of pregnancy,” the doctor said regretfully. “She can never get pregnant again.”
The doctor’s words made Fang Mei take a deep breath. She turned to look out the window, her expression reflected in the glass, making it difficult to discern. But even from her profile, one could still sense her heartache. A young mother, barely 30, had suffered 3 miscarriages and was subsequently deprived of the right to motherhood. It’s all because of marrying this man, because of this family, and because of the pressure from her own parents.
On the other hand, the old woman froze, then burst into tears, “Miscarriage? You useless piece of trash (to FM)! You couldn’t even save a child! My little grandson!”
But Fang Mei turned her head, her face expressionless, watching her mother-in-law’s wailing.
Wu Licheng’s eyes were also red-rimmed, and he shouted uncontrollably, “Miscarriage? Why did you miscarry? You couldn’t keep the baby again!”
At this point, Gu Ye’s expression turned cold, and he kicked Wu Licheng in the back of the knee, knocking him to the ground. Seeing Wu Licheng’s agitated state, fearing he might do something rash, the police immediately restrained him. “Stay put, don’t move.”
Wu Licheng quieted down, but the old woman continued to cry and scream, repeatedly crying that her grandson was gone, “My little grandson!” The more she looked at Fang Mei lying on the bed, the angrier she became. The old woman angrily lunged at Fang Mei, trying to grab her, “You good-for-nothing! You can’t have children anymore, what use are you? If our family line ends, it’s all your fault!”
The doctor and nurses were standing by the bed, so when they saw the old woman acting like this, they all came to stop her. The old woman, despite her age, was surprisingly strong, shoving a young nurse until she stumbled.
The doctors and nurses couldn’t bear to watch any longer. They were all women, some of them mothers themselves, and seeing the mother-in-law like this made them furious. One doctor said irritably, “It’s not that she didn’t want to have children, it’s that she was beaten and lost them. She got pregnant 3 times, and all three were gone from the beating. She’s only in her thirties. Who will be responsible for her life then? Your son kicked her in the stomach, you know that? He kicked her, and she lost them. You should blame your son.”
“Why should I blame…” The old woman paused, remembering the scene of her son hitting Fang Mei. Even if she tried to argue, she couldn’t bring herself to say the rest. She sat down on the ground and burst into tears from the anger. The police, seeing her like this, realized that they couldn’t just ignore the commotion and tried to pull her up. However, the old woman launched into a tantrum. She directed her anger at the police officer, slapping him several times. “You dare touch me? Nobody’s allowed to touch me! My grandson’s gone, can’t I even cry a little?”
The officer replied with a grim expression, “You can cry, but can you please not cry here? This is a hospital, and a lot of patients stay here. Your daughter-in-law’s injuries are serious, you know? And the patients around here need rest. If you continue like this, we won’t care if the people in the next ward come and beat you up.”
“Hit me?! Hit me then!” Slapping her own thigh, the old woman closed her eyes and started throwing a tantrum without a care in the world. She was upset, and she didn’t care if anyone else was either. “Who’s going to compensate me for my grandson?!”
By now, the police officers were getting angry too. Two of them pulled her up. “Come on, let’s go outside and talk.”
“Aiyo! You’re molesting me! You pervert! Don’t touch me!”
The police officers were furious. “You’re so old, how can you act like this?”
The old woman continued to make a scene. “My grandson is gone, and you’re still going to arrest my son! I can’t live anymore anyway, so I’m making a scene! I’m not only making a scene, I’m going to die! You’re driving me to my death! Help! The police are driving me to my death!”
The police officers rubbed their foreheads. They rarely saw an old woman throwing tantrums so aggressively.
Gu Ye only stood aside and said calmly, “Cry as much as you want. Your family line is broken. No one will even come to visit your grave. How can you not cry about something so heartbreaking?”
The old woman’s sobs stopped. “You’re talking nonsense!”
Gu Ye chuckled. “You probably don’t know what I do. I’m a fortune teller. A quick internet search will show you who I am. Do you know why I’m here to see Fang Mei? Because I can tell that your family line is about to end, your son will go to jail, and your daughter’s death is partly your fault. You’ll be so old you won’t even be able to crawl out of the house to beg for food. Go ahead and cry, cry your heart out so we can have a good laugh.”
The old woman couldn’t cry anymore. “You’re cursing me!”
Gu Ye said disdainfully, “I’m not going to bother with an old woman who will be starved to death. Officer, she also hit Fang Mei; we all saw it. I’m going to sue the whole family, every single one of them.”
Hearing that, Attorney Zhang nodded, noting it down. “Yes, young master, we have a legal team. We’ll handle it all and sue her for attempted murder; none of them will escape.”
The old woman finally showed fear. She got up, looked around at everyone, and saw they were all staring at her with hostility. People from other wards who had come to watch the commotion also looked at her with utter disdain. The old woman pointed at the people around her, finally fixing her gaze on Fang Mei. “Fine, you’re all so ruthless. Fang Mei, you want a divorce? You want to sue my son? You just wait!”
After saying this, the old woman told her son, “Don’t worry, we’re not afraid of her. I’ll make her respectfully invite you back.” Next, the old woman hurriedly ran away.
The ward finally quieted down, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. This old woman was too much of a troublemaker. Then, the medical staff all turned to stare at Gu Ye, some in shock, some in surprise. A young nurse asked, “Are you really Gu Ye, the Gu Ye from the internet?”
Gu Ye smiled. “Yes.”
The young nurse asked excitedly, “What brings you here?”
Gu Ye said helplessly, “I saw something unjust, so I came to intervene.”
Xie Cheng took a mask out of Gu Ye’s pocket and covered his face. “Quickly hide your face, I’m worried about the reporters coming.”
The young nurse smiled and took a picture of this scene, posting Gu Ye’s masked profile on her WeChat Moments with the caption: “The most righteous 2nd gen rich kid. Some say he’s a good-for-nothing, wasting the high starting point his parents gave him. But when he stands up for the suffering, he’s really cool. I’d only heard of him before and had a good impression, but now I’m going to follow him; I’m a fan.”
The young nurse never expected her post to go viral online so quickly soon.
After the old lady left, Gu Ye and Xie Cheng rested for a while, planning to investigate the deceased woman’s case. The woman’s name was Wu Guilan, Wu Licheng’s younger sister. She was the same age as Fang Mei, in her early thirties, and married Fang Mei’s brother, Fang Ping. They married relatively young; the woman obtained her marriage certificate as soon as she reached the legal age, and the following year they had a child, it’s that little girl named Fang Yuzhou.
Both of them felt that the woman’s death was suspicious, most likely due to domestic violence. Xie Cheng asked, “How about we perform a spirit summoning tonight, and go to the cemetery to take a look?”
Gu Ye shook his head. “I think Wu Guilan is probably with her daughter.”
“Sigh, even in death, she’s not at peace.”
“There’s nothing we can do. Judging from the child’s reaction, her family didn’t treat her well.”
Xie Cheng said sarcastically, “Judging from the way these two families do things, girls are always a burden/waste of money. Since the child’s mother is gone, and her father suspected her of infidelity, the child is treated like a bastard. So what kind of good life can this child possibly have?”
As Gu Ye and Xie Cheng were sighing, a nurse rushed in to tell them, “Something bad has happened! Fang Mei’s mother-in-law is here again.”
Xie Cheng said irritably, “Why is this old lady so troublesome?”
“This time she didn’t come alone; she brought Fang Mei’s parents with her.”
Gu Ye frowned, knowing immediately that what was about to happen wouldn’t be pleasant. He stood up helplessly. “Let’s go see.” When they reached the ward door, Gu Ye saw an elderly woman with gray hair and an elderly man with a cane sitting by the bed. Fang Mei’s gaze remained indifferent; having seen through life and death, this indifference was chilling. Even in front of her parents, she had nothing to say.
It would be a lie to say the old lady didn’t care about her daughter. She asked, “How did she get beaten like this? Where’s Licheng?”
As soon as Fang Mei’s mother mentioned Wu Licheng, her mother-in-law turned hostile and yelled, “You still have the nerve to ask about Licheng? Look what your daughter has done! She’s been seeing a few gigolos/pretty boys outside! Then she called the police and had Licheng arrested!”
Hearing how the old woman twisted the truth, a nurse nearby couldn’t stand it anymore and explained, “Wu Licheng was arrested because he almost killed Fang Mei and caused trouble at the hospital. It has nothing to do with who saved Fang Mei.”
“You know nothing!” the old lady snapped, directly scolding the nurse. “Should she listen to you or me? When did our family affairs become your business? I haven’t even questioned you guys yet for failing to save my grandson, and you’re stirring things up here? Young lady, so gossipy and shameless!”
The nurse’s face flushed red from the scolding. She opened her mouth, but a person of good manners couldn’t argue with such an old lady and almost cried from anger.
Hearing this, Gu Ye and Xie Cheng’s expressions both turned cold. Xie Cheng wanted nothing more than to open the window and throw the old woman out; he’d never seen such a shameless person. Gu Ye pulled him back, telling him there was no rush and to hear what Fang Mei’s parents had to say.
Wang Mei’s parents seemed terrified of the old woman. Even though they felt sorry for their daughter, they still tried to persuade Fang Mei, “Why was Li Cheng arrested? I heard you’re getting a divorce. Child, it’s not that I’m criticizing you, but you’re over thirty, and you can’t have children anymore. Who will want you if you get divorced? Just continue living your life properly with him.”
Fang Mei gave a cold laugh, her eyes icy as she looked at her mother. She really wanted to ask, the fact that she is in such a predicament, who was responsible for this? Does she know what would happen to her if she continued living with him? She also wanted to ask her mother if she can’t have any more children, has she ever considered that her life in the Wu family will be even worse than it is now? But looking into her mother’s eyes, Fang Mei couldn’t utter a single question. All her despair manifested in a cold smile, her eyes chillingly cold.
Fang Mei’s parents felt a chill run down their spines when they saw her like this. Her mother’s tears fell. “My child, why do you look at me like that? We know you’re suffering, but you have to think about us. Your father and I are getting old. You can’t leave us with nothing but someone to break the pot for us.”
Fang Mei said indifferently, “10 years. I’ve had enough.”
Fang Mei’s father chimed in, “Giving birth to you and raising you is a debt of gratitude beyond measure. We’ve raised you for over 20 years, providing you with food, shelter, clothing, and even your education. Child, you can’t be so heartless; you have to think of us.”
“Yes, daughter, so many years have passed. Even if you divorce, you won’t find someone good. We’re doing this for your own good.”
The elderly couple’s message was clear: divorce was not an option.
